To the Editor: Some of the principles underlying evidence-based medicine (EBM)* might have been around far longer than we tend to believe. Here is a fragment of one of the 8777 brief suttas (discourses) collected in the Anguttara-nikaya, or "Collection of the gradual sayings", one of the oldest Buddhist texts. The Buddha preaches to the Kalamas people:
